When I was pregnant with my daughter, the first thing I wanted to do was decorate her bedroom. I decided to find out if I was having a boy or a girl, so that I could have the bedroom prepared for my baby’s arrival. I was delighted to be having a girl and I painted her bedroom a soft pink, which is her favorite color and was easy to work with when it became time for an actual bed.
On my daughters 4th birthday, we decided a regular bed was in order and I went shopping. I’ve always loved sleigh beds and have one in my own bedroom. However, my husband and I spoiled her terribly and I decided to shop storage beds for extra room. I was so happy when I came across a sleigh bed with storage. I found it in a dark cherry that accented her pink room perfectly and I matched the wood of her dresser and nightstand creating a comfortable space.
The storage drawers underneath the bed held most of her toys and I only needed to add a small toy box in her room for the rest. She is 8 now and her room stays tidy with the easy storage that she has under her bed. In a few years I may start looking at trundle beds for her friends to have a place to sleep during a slumber party.
A few years ago, I discovered that I was pregnant again, and was lucky enough to be having a boy. I was excited to begin the process of changing our spare bedroom into a nursery for our little boy. We painted the room dark blue and added wainscoting in white on the bottom half of the walls. I choose a fire truck and police car theme. My mother made his baby blanket in the theme of his bedroom and we added pictures.
He is now 4 and I am shopping for a new bed. I am looking at storage beds for his room because we have the same overabundance of toys for him. I may get him bunk beds with extra storage along the sides, or a similar style I have for my daughter, with drawers underneath. I intend to purchase a new bed with a dark wood to complement the color of his bedroom.
My children’s bedrooms are smaller than I would like and we are considering finishing our basement for them to have larger bedrooms. I love shopping for furniture and I can’t wait to redecorate, including purchasing larger beds for them. I know they will appreciate more space as they get bigger. With new bedrooms they’ll have input as to the decoration style and what type of theme they would like to have.
I’ve been saving magazine articles to give them an idea of what I would like to do. For my daughter I would like her new bedroom to be French Country with blue and white accents. Her furniture would be cream and I would love a blue quilt with white drapes. I think this style would move with her into her teenage years.
The wood was antique walnut and the scrollwork on the side was very detailed. I found an article that gave instructions for making a shelf out of ropes and beach wood. I kept that in my folder for future reference, so even though these are future plans I hope to follow through with them soon.
