Fun Bedroom Decorating Ideas For Kids

Whenever I need to redecorate one of my kids’ bedrooms, I usually start by browsing through several magazines and websites specializing in bedroom decorating ideas for kids. I have to admit, I’m not all that creative, so I tend to look for ideas that I can use to get me started and then branch off from there.

For example, when my oldest was small I spent a good deal of time browsing through wall paper books looking for something that would be very boyish, but still keep with being playful and fun. When I saw a wall border print with railroad cars and stripped paper to match, I knew this would be a great choice. Not only did my little one love trains, it gave me a lot of flexibility in designing his room. You can find rugs, lamps, clocks, sheets and just about anything else that will go with the theme.

When looking for bedroom decorating ideas for kids I have found that it is usually best to go with a general theme and then build from there. For instance, instead of going with Disney princesses, you could simply go with princesses in general. This gives you a lot more flexibility when choosing accessories to go with the room; it is also typically much less expensive. However, if you daughter has her heart set on the Disney theme, you can be sure you’ll find a lot of options. To get the best price spend some time comparison shopping and you will be able to make her happy as well as stay within your budget.

Once you have chosen a theme or design for the room, you can find coordinating wall borders or even wall paper that can really bring a coordinated and beautiful touch to the room. However, there are also many great painting techniques that can easily be applied to the walls and will be much less expensive than hanging wall paper. In fact, some people even hire a local artist to come in and paint a beautiful mural in their child’s room. These murals can be extraordinarily beautiful and seem very three-dimensional and real.

When decorating a child’s room another big consideration is the type of furniture you will use, especially the bed. There are a lot of great choices, but trundle beds have been popular for many years because it allows the child to have an extra bed that they can slide out for overnight guests. This can be a fun way to enjoy a sleepover without the inconvenience of putting two children in the same bed together. Let’s face it, it’s hard enough to get kids to sleep.

If you have two or more children sharing a bedroom, many parents opt for bunk beds or twin beds. This gives each child a bed of their own without taking up too much floor space. Bunk beds can be a great option for children and as they get older, the beds can be separated and set on opposite walls as two individual beds. My kids always loved having bunk beds, but it is important that you not put young children in the top bunk because they could fall. Once a child is about seven or eight they will likely be ready to sleep in the upper bunk. There are fun enclosures that look like princess castles, army forts and many other styles that can make it a great place for kids to play and pretend.
