When trying to decide on interior decorating ideas for a room that is to be a combined guest room and home office, it can become a bit tricky. You want to be able to use the space when you have no guests but you want your office files secure when you do have guests. At the same time the room cannot be barren for a guest room but needs to be roomy for an office. When planning how to decorate, you should use neutral bedroom colors for the walls first. The bedroom design won’t need to be anything extravagant but should be warm and friendly.

Being a home office you will need to make sure you have enough room for a small desk and maybe a small filing cabinet as well. You will want to blend the additional furniture into the room, so plan for a wood grain for the desk, filing cabinet, dresser and end tables. This will bring a uniform look to the room. For a guest room you want to determine the ages of the guests that will be visiting you usually. Many times it will be a couple. For this reason you should consider king size beds if the room size permits over bunk beds, twin beds or trundle beds.

Although you may trust your guests totally, you should allow for the option of locking the desk drawers and filing cabinets. That way there will no question about your personal information or anything of that nature. It’s a good idea to have the option to lock these things anyways, as sometimes children have a tendency to be into things they shouldn’t be.

For decorating the room you might consider a few pictures on the wall such as a flower design or a landscape design. If you plan to paint designs on the walls, you may not need to add anything additional to the walls, just let the painting design show through. Lighting will be an important factor since this will also double as your office when it’s not a guest room. Normally you would want a low light in the bedroom, so you will need to add a desk lamp in order to ensure you have enough light to work by.

When working in the room as an office, you might want an internet connection as well. At the same time your guests may have a need to use internet while they are visiting. If your household is on dial up this will create issues of conflict with the internet use. Sometimes it is better if you have the option of using wireless that you can carry with you. That way when the room is used for your guests your internet can leave the room with you.

After you’ve decided on a paint scheme, decorations, furniture, lighting and so on, it is time to get to work. You shouldn’t plan the renovation the day before your expecting guests but rather plan for a few days minimum to allow the paint smell to leave the room. If there is carpeting you will likely need a floor mat for your chair as is recommended for computer use. Without an anti-static floor mat you could cause problems with your computer. You will likely want to be able to remove this to have it out of the way of guests as well.
